“London-based SMC can have faced few installations as demanding as this spectacular fifth-floor den.

The AMX-controlled cinema was to be the jewel in the sumptuous crown of a mansion being customised to an exacting standard, but the room’s original dimensions, sloping ceiling and acoustics were far from suited for their intended purpose.

In the finished cinema, seating for 12 people has been created by building a two-tier platform, with a chaise longue at the front for the ultimate in movie viewing decadence. The rake of the room dictated that a projector with a long throw lens be mounted at the rear of the seats – a Runco VX-3000 was chosen, firing images from Sky HD, a Denon BDP-2010 Blu-ray and Classé CDP-300 DVD deck on to a 118in screen with auto masking. This is needed for the VX-3000′s CineWide and AutoScope functions that flawlessly project Hollywood movies in their correct aspect ratio.

Blown away
Acoustics treatments were applied including panel and cavity resonators, and heavy use was made of soft furnishings, including the customised Fortress Matinee seats. All seats are fitted with Crowson Transducers for added rumble to complement the 2,000W of LFE generated by the dual B&W CT8SW subwoofers that have been built within the window dormers – the rest of the 9.2 system uses high-end B&W speakers, too. The result is a theatre that sounds as good as it looks.
